Online Safety

Our Approach to Online Safety

The online world and its effective use are an essential part of learning across the curriculum. We recognise that technology offers numerous benefits for our young people, enabling them to deepen their understanding of the world and enhance their interactions with one another. We also recognise that unmediated access brings with it the possibility of placing pupils in embarrassing, inappropriate and challenging situations.

Online safety is a whole-school community safeguarding responsibility, and we are committed to working together with parents and carers to help children use the internet in a safe and rewarding way.

How We Keep Your Child Safe at School

At Sefton Park, we place a strong emphasis on all our pupils becoming digitally aware citizens through:

Teaching and learning:

  • We teach specific online safety lessons as part of our computing curriculum.
  • We focus on developing digitally aware citizens who understand online risks and safety.

Technical safeguards:

  • We have a range of security measures to ensure all pupils are safeguarded.
  • Any online safety incidents are recorded in line with our policy.

Clear agreements:

  • All our junior children agree to the Pupil Acceptable Use Agreement (PDF) before being allowed to use the computers in school.
  • All our staff agree and sign a Computing Code of Conduct to comply with school expectations.

Supporting Online Safety at Home

The digital world extends far beyond the classroom, and we want to support you in helping your child navigate online spaces safely and confidently at home.

While the internet offers excellent opportunities for learning and connection, it's essential to be aware that children may encounter inappropriate content, online bullying, contact from strangers, or situations that make them feel uncomfortable or unsafe. By working together, we can help children develop the skills and confidence to handle these challenges.

Building a Foundation of Trust

Creating a positive approach to online safety starts with open communication:

  • Create an honest and open dialogue about the internet and using different devices.
  • Show children you trust them and that they can trust you to understand that mistakes will be made and solutions can be found.
  • If your child wants to use a new device, app or website, talk it through and agree on rules together.

The online world is constantly evolving. We'll keep you updated on new apps, social media, websites, and games.
