Year 5/6 Chess Tournament
Thu 30 Mar 2023The annual Year 5 and 6 Chess Competition concluded with the grand final held in the school library. Rex (Yr 5) played James (Yr 6) after a gruelling tournament that took 8 weeks and 9 rounds of competition. The final was watched by a record crowd of 20 keen supporters, oohing and arhing every move. However, the final was emphatically won by Rex and he will hold the trophy aloft. It has been a great tournament, led by the children, and a great way to end the winter term.

School Council hear about playground plans
Sun 26 Mar 2023Last week, the school council had a presentation from Touchwood Play, https://touchwoodplay.co.uk/, about their plans for enhancing our playground space. The children heard about potential designs to improve the area known as the 'Woodland'. They listened to a 20 minute presentation from Joe before asking questions and giving their opinions. The school council members then fed back what they had heard to their classmates to gather their thoughts and opinions. A final decision has yet to be made on how the playground will look but the children are all agreed that they would like it to retain its rustic and natural feel. Watch this space!

Poets visit - Alex Wharton and Jo Bennett
Thu 02 Mar 2023This year's World Book Day focus is on Poetry. To bring Poetry to life for our children, we have had two visiting poets. Jo Bennett, parent and poet visited on Monday and inspired the children to write poetry in the classroom. On Wednesday, Alex Wharton, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7rHgXIvkYA, visited giving workshops to years 2 and 3 whilst entertaining the whole school in assemblies. He spoke about the creative spirit, how to perform and where to find inspiration for ideas. We are fortunate to have had both poets bring poetry to the forefront of our children's thinking.

Unicornfest visit from Artist Amy Magee
Sun 12 Feb 2023On Friday, the school had a surprise visit from the Artist of our entry in Unicornfest this summer. We were delighted that Amy Maggee, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSa9dUNCMX0) was able to visit our 6 artist whose entries into the Unicornfest competition had been chosen to provide inspiration for Amy.
We had over 80 entries into the competition and, as ever, the quality of work was incredibly impressive. The winning designs were chosen by our school council and a huge congratulations go to Lila, Hafsa, Max, Tom, Lana and Ava for their entries. Amy was really impressed by their work. The children then had an afternoon working with Amy, discussing their designs and inputting their thoughts into the painting technique for the Unicorn.
We are hugely indebted to Matt and the Forge and Fern (https://theforges.co.uk/) for allowing Sefton Park to be involved in such a creative city wide project in aid of Leukemia Aid.

Reception workshop and trip to the Park.
Mon 23 Jan 2023On Friday, an actor named Fleur from Perform for schools visited our Reception classes. The children went out in groups of 20 (10 from each class). The workshops followed a story line of a clown that had lost its smile. The children went on a journey to help the clown find its smile. The children also came up with ways to help the clown smile and laugh. The children all thoroughly enjoyed it and are still re-enacting and talking about it now.
The workshops are designed to build the children's confidence, grow their communication skills and help them with concentration. Within the sessions they built on the children's imaginative skills through games and improvisation and encouraged confident speaking and good listening using rhyme and poetry.
On Wednesday the children visited the Park. Despite the rather chilly weather, they had a lovely time and played some great games.

Year 1 trip to the Theatre
Mon 09 Jan 2023On Friday, the Year 1's visited the Tobacco Factory in South Bristol to watch a performance of the Snow Queen. The children joined the character Gerda on her quest to the frozen north as she tries to save her best-friend Kaj from the icy, wicked clutches of The Snow Queen. The children loved the trip and were talking about it non-stop on their return. It really was a great way to begin the New Year and leads nicely into the year 1 topic - Fairy tales.

Fantastic Juno
Fri 06 Jan 2023We start the New Year with one of our Year 6 Pupils, Juno, celebrated in the Bishopston Matters for her walking achievement. Last year, Juno set herself the challenge to walk 1000 miles and raise £1000 for the children's hospital. She achieved this task in December and we are really proud of her achievements.
Download the latest edition of Bishopston matters (page 14) for a write up on how this was successfully accomplished.
